  • Reclaim’s occupational therapists have advanced training and knowledge in occupational engagement for fitness to drive. Driver rehab specialists assist clients with evaluation and training to determine safe goals.

  • A driving evaluation is an evaluation of an individual’s driving. It includes 3 main steps.

    Step 1: review of clinical testing of sensation, vision, movement, & thinking.
    Step 2: a behind-the-wheel assessment in a driving rehab vehicle.
    Step 3: Discussion of outcomes.

  • The full process takes about 3 hours

  • On-the-Road evaluation takes place in our driver rehab car which is specially equipped with equipment to keep yourself and others safe.

    We will give you time to get use to our car before the evaluation begins!

  • We will take the time to explain the outcomes of our comprehensive evaluation and recommendations with you and family member or friend.

    Outcomes may include return or continue driving, additional driving training, hold on driving with plans for re-evaluation, or driving retirement.

  • We assess your driving ability and how illness or injury affects it. Our team collaborates with you, your family, and your doctor to set safe driving goals. We may need to send reports to the Motor Vehicle Commission but we'll talk to you about it beforehand. The MVC is the agency responsible for your driver's license.

  • If you haven't driven in a while or are recovering from an injury, driving training can be useful. It's also available if you're learning to use special equipment. After your evaluation, your specialist will discuss training recommendations and create a plan for you. Sessions usually last 1.5 to 2 hours, with the number of sessions differing for each driver.

  • Please bring with you to your appointment:

    • Valid driver’s license

    • Physician referral ordering “OT Driving Evaluation and Treatment”

    • Completed Intake & Signed forms

    • Payment (Checks made out to ‘Reclaim the Road Driver Rehabilitation’)

  • Reclaim Driver Rehab is a cash-based practice. Driving evaluations usually aren't covered by insurance, and we don’t bill insurance. If your insurance covers this service, we can give you a copy of your evaluation to submit for reimbursement. However, payment is still required at the time of service, and filing for insurance is the client's responsibility.

  • If you have loss sensation in your right foot, or have loss the use of your arm or leg, there may be adaptive equipment options to make it easier to drive. During your driving evaluation, we will help select and trial adaptive equipment options.

    Common adaptive driving equipment options include hand controls (for using the left arm for gas & brake while the right arm steers), steering devices, adaptive mirrors, and left foot accelerators (for using the left foot for gas & brake).

  • Our comprehensive driving evaluation ranges from $350 to $500. For those beyond Morris county, a small travel fee may apply to offset fuel costs. Please reach out to us directly for a quote.
