Supporting Safe & Independent Driving

At Reclaim the Road Driver Rehabilitation, our mission is to promote safe, confident, and self-sufficient driving for individuals facing medical or age-related changes. Our comprehensive driving assessments are designed to help you — and your loved ones — make informed decisions about your fitness to drive.

Our Occupational Therapy Driving Rehabilitation Specialists provide personalized evaluations that take into account your unique abilities, needs, and goals. We’re here to offer clarity, support, and expert guidance during times of transition.

A driving assessment may be recommended if you or someone you care about is showing signs of change that could impact safe driving.

If any of the following sound familiar, it may be time to schedule an evaluation:

  • Slower reaction times or lagging reflexes

  • Shorter attention span or trouble focusing

  • Difficulty with memory, problem-solving, or clear thinking

  • Poor decision-making or delayed responses in traffic situations

  • Tingling, numbness, or diminished sensation in hands or feet

  • Stiff joints, weak muscles, or limited range of motion

  • Physical impairments affecting the ability to steer, brake, or operate pedals

  • Poor or blurred vision, diminished night vision, or difficulty spotting signs

  • Hearing problems that affect awareness of traffic sounds

  • Drowsiness, fatigue, or medication side effects

  • Increased anxiety, agitation, or nervousness while driving

  • Getting lost on familiar routes or confusion behind the wheel

  • Recent falls or reduced physical stability

  • Near-misses, fender benders, or other changes in driving behavior

  • Recent major illnesses, injuries, or medical events

  • Concerns voiced by family members, friends, or healthcare providers

The Three Steps of a Driver Evaluation

Our comprehensive driver evaluation is completed in three key steps to ensure safety and informed decision-making. First, a clinical assessment is conducted to evaluate cognitive, visual, and physical abilities relevant to driving. If appropriate, the next step is a behind-the-wheel evaluation, where skills are assessed in real traffic conditions. Finally, we hold an outcomes discussion to review results and make recommendations.

Please note: not all clients will proceed to the on-road evaluation if clinical findings indicate significant safety concerns.

Clinical Assessment

As part of your comprehensive driving evaluation, we will thoroughly assess all the essential skills required for safe and effective driving. This includes evaluating your vision — such as clarity, peripheral awareness, and depth perception — to ensure you can recognize signs, signals, and potential hazards. We’ll also examine your physical movement, including your ability to turn your head, move your arms and legs comfortably to operate vehicle controls like the steering wheel, pedals, and gear shifter.

In addition, we’ll assess the sensation in your hands and feet, checking for any numbness, tingling, or weakness that might interfere with your reaction time or control of the vehicle. Finally, we’ll evaluate your cognitive abilities, including attention, memory, decision-making, and problem-solving — all critical for navigating traffic, reacting to unexpected situations, and making safe driving choices.

Behind-the-Wheel Evaluation

As part of your on-road evaluation, you’ll drive one of our specially equipped rehabilitation vehicles, designed to meet a wide range of physical and mobility needs. Accompanied by a Driving Rehabilitation Specialist, you will drive both familiar and unfamiliar routes within your own community. This setting allows us to observe how you handle real-world driving situations — including stoplights, intersections, merging, and navigating traffic — in an environment that reflects your typical driving experience. This hands-on portion of the assessment provides valuable insight into your current driving abilities and helps us make safe, personalized recommendations.

Outcome Discussion

After your evaluation is complete, we will carefully review the results from both the clinical and on-road portions of the assessment. This includes a detailed look at your performance in areas such as vision, cognition, physical ability, reaction time, and how you handled various real-world driving situations. We’ll then sit down with you — and, a trusted family member, friend, or caregiver — to walk through the findings together.

Our goal is to ensure that you fully understand the outcomes and what they mean for your current and future driving. We will also share this information with your physician or other healthcare providers to support continuity of care. Following this discussion, we’ll talk through recommended next steps, which may include return to driving, additional training, use of adaptive equipment, or exploring alternative transportation options.

Every recommendation is made with your safety, independence, and personal goals in mind.
